Served as the prime consultant for a traditional housing
development on 25 acres. Author of the Community Master
Plan and Design Guidelines. Includes 60 quarter-acre
parcels, 1 acre central park, 1.5 acre constructed
stormwater wetland, preservation of existing tree
rows and woodland wetlands and pedestrian friendly
streets.

SQUARE URBAN VILLAGE

Location: Springfield, Massachusetts

S. R. Volpe, University of Massachusetts, Towards Restoration
of the Urban Village: Proposals for Mason Square, Springfield,
MA. Funded by the City of Springfield.
Proposed a complex neighborhood design strategy to revitalize
a once vibrant neighborhood.
Addressed the politics of public and private investment
and the physical reorganization of
1) The Open Space System of streets, parks and undeveloped
land,
2) The abandoned railroad Pedestrian Corridor,
3) The State Street Mixed-use Spine and
4) The Mason Square Neighborhood Core.
